Kettle clicks on, lights go out. Sound familiar? Trip it once, you reset it, no big deal. Trip it three times in a week, though, and honestly, that’s not bad luck anymore. That’s a warning. We get calls about this constantly. Usually from someone who’s already flicked the switch back on twice and is quietly starting to wonder if they should be worried. Short answer: yes, a bit. Not panic worthy. But worth sorting properly instead of just living with a switch you reset every other day.

So what’s actually going on when a socket or circuit keeps cutting out? What does it usually turn out to be once we’ve had a proper look? And how do you tell whether it’s something you can safely check yourself, versus something that needs a qualified electrician straight away? Let’s get into it.

MCB or RCD? Why the Difference Matters

Two different things get lumped together under “tripping” in most homes. And knowing which one you’re actually dealing with tells you a lot before an electrician even turns up.

An MCB is that small labelled switch in your fuse board, typically rated around 6A for lighting or 32A for a ring main. It trips when it senses too much current on that one circuit. Usually that’s overload, too many high draw appliances running at once on the same loop. Sometimes it’s a fault on the circuit itself instead, a damaged cable, a dodgy connection somewhere along the run.

An RCD is a different beast entirely. Instead of watching for overload, it compares the current going out on the live wire against what’s coming back on neutral. Don’t match within roughly 30 milliamps, and it assumes current is leaking somewhere it shouldn’t, usually to earth, and cuts the power. RCDs are far more sensitive than MCBs. They’ll trip from a damp socket, a faulty appliance, even condensation sitting inside an outdoor fitting. Flip one switch and half the house goes dark, lights included? That’s almost certainly the RCD. And the cause could be anywhere on the circuits it protects, not just whatever you happened to be using at the time.

Overloaded Circuits: The Most Common Culprit

Ask any electrician what causes the most callouts for tripping, and overload wins nearly every time. It’s especially common in older properties, and we see plenty across Barking and East Ham, wired decades before anyone imagined the appliance load a modern kitchen carries now. A kettle alone can pull close to 3kW. Add a toaster, a microwave, and a space heater on the same ring, all fed through one overworked extension lead, and you’re asking a lot of a circuit built for a much lighter era.

Here’s the good news though. This one’s usually the easiest fix going. No wiring changes needed at all. Spread demanding appliances across different circuits, or just avoid running several at once, and the problem often vanishes completely. Costs nothing beyond a bit of rearranging.

Faulty Appliances Are a Close Second

A washing machine with a heating element on its way out. A fridge whose compressor winding has quietly started breaking down. A hairdryer or portable heater that’s seen better days. Any of these can leak current to earth, or draw more than they should, and the circuit does exactly what it’s built to do. It cuts the power.

Annoyingly, the appliance often still seems to work fine day to day, right up until the moment it trips the board. Which is why isolating the actual culprit matters more than resetting the switch and hoping it was a one off. Unplug everything on the affected circuit. Bring items back one at a time over an hour or so. More often than you’d think, the real culprit isn’t even the appliance itself. It’s an old extension lead, or a freezer nobody suspected because it’s always run fine before.

Damp, Damage, and Ageing Wiring

Damp is a big one. Outdoor sockets, garages, older bathrooms, all prime territory. Moisture getting into a connection, whether through a poorly sealed outdoor fitting, a garden cable nicked by a strimmer, or condensation building up in an unheated garage, will set an RCD off reliably. And it’ll keep doing it every time conditions turn damp again, right up until the actual ingress gets fixed rather than just dried out and forgotten about.

Then there’s plain old wear and age. Loose terminals. Perished, brittle insulation on older rubber sheathed cable. A consumer unit well past its working life. None of it announces itself from the outside. But it’s very often exactly why a circuit that’s behaved for twenty years suddenly starts causing grief. Rough rule of thumb, household wiring is generally good for about 25 to 30 years before it’s worth a proper assessment.

A Safe Way to Narrow It Down Yourself

Before ringing anyone, there’s a bit of sensible troubleshooting most people can manage themselves. Honestly, it speeds things up once an electrician does arrive too.

Note exactly what tripped, a single MCB or the main RCD, and what was running at the time. Unplug everything on that circuit, reset the switch, and if it holds, bring appliances back one at a time, a minute or two apart. Whichever one causes it to trip again, that’s your suspect. While you’re at it, check plugs and visible cable for scorch marks, cracking, or a faceplate that feels warm. Any of that, stop testing and just call someone.

What you should never do: open the consumer unit, poke around inside connections, or keep forcing a reset on a trip that won’t stay on. Repeated tripping means the circuit is doing its job, protecting you from something. Override that yourself, or try to diagnose a wiring fault by hand, and a tripped switch turns into a genuinely serious problem fast.

When It’s Time to Call In a Professional

Trip keeps coming back? Can’t pin it to one appliance after testing? Main RCD going rather than a single MCB? That’s your cue. Bring in a qualified electrician instead of guessing further at home. Same goes if a breaker trips the instant you reset it with nothing plugged in at all. That usually points to a fault in the fixed wiring rather than anything you own. Burning smells, scorch marks, buzzing from a socket, a faceplate still warm long after use, none of that is wait and see territory. Stop and get it looked at, simple as that.
